Denim development at Omoto is a rigorous process of trial and error executed alongside the world's finest spinning, dyeing, and weaving artisans in the Sanbi region of Japan. The brand works exclusively with heavy-grade, low-tension selvedge denims ranging from 13.5 oz to 16 oz, woven on vintage shuttle looms.
Omoto’s core fabrics are woven on uniquely modified 1950s Sakamoto shuttle looms and vintage Toyoda GL8 looms. Operating under extremely low warp tension, these mechanical looms interlace heavy cotton yarns loosely, producing a characteristic rough, slubby, and textured surface that modern automated looms simply cannot replicate.
To achieve the perfect harmony between rugged structural integrity and immediate comfort, Omoto utilizes custom cotton blends. A standout signature is their bi-blend combining raw USA Memphis cotton (providing crispness, firmness, and durability) with long-staple Zimbabwean cotton (delivering breathability and a downy-soft hand feel).
All Omoto warp yarns undergo traditional rope-dyeing using 100% pure indigo. This process saturates the outer layer of the yarn while leaving the inner core completely white (Nakawiro or core-white). As daily friction breaks down the indigo surface, the stark white core is gradually exposed, generating dramatic, high-contrast vertical fades reminiscent of mid-century 1950s workwear.
